Developing basic skills through being a tour guide

A group of local residents visits a Viennese neighbourhood, with a course participant as their tour guide

The pilot project in Vienna (Austria) started from the observation that in many families with lower levels of formal education, the parent and grand parent generation can be brought into contact with the world of learning through the activities of their children and grand children, especially when this is related to out-of-scool activites.

Wiener Volkshochschulen therefore designed a training for teenagers  and young adults to become experts for their neighbourhood and as such offer city tours, or neighbourhood toors to their peers and families. Getting involved with topics of history, architecture, sociology and local government has positive effects on basic skills, and helps getting the older generation into contact to other parts of society, including the local adult education organisations.

Watch our 5 minutes video documentary on this innovative course.

The video is availabe in several European languages.
