Places of Worship Can Be Used Also to Promote the Love of Local Language
German language (reading and writing) courses provided in mosques; this helps include people into the courses who otherwise could not be reached.
In Germany there are more than 2000 mosques and prayer houses where Muslims pray, meet, celebrate
and learn together. Some of those visiting the mosque have difficulties in reading and writing in German. As they do not necessarily know about public adult education opportunities in Germany, it is a good idea to offer classes of basic education in mosques.
Cami is the Turkish word for mosque, the traditional religious meeting place for Muslims. Here Muslims feel at home and at ease, and one can expect to raise their interest in basic education. Therefore, GIZ gGmbH, an adult education non-profit in Berlin, founded in 2000 and focussing on migrants, started the ABCami project, largely based on funding by the German Federal Ministry of Education.
The project started in 2012 and ended in 2018, but the approach is being continued in a follow-up project by the name of KAZA (details see at the end of this article).
